Work. Work is sometimes referred to as the sum of our existence. Work is why we get up early in the morning and go home late at night. Work is what consumes most of our energies. We need to have jobs, so we are not idle, so we can have sense of purpose, and so we can survive in today’s world. Work utilizes our talents, supports our family’s needs and wants. However, work is also where we tend to be stressed out, with related issues making us weak, and at times, it even gives us some anxiety panic attacks.

Why Is The Atlantic Ocean So Desirable?

February 22, 2012 at 11:03 pm • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

Well it might be wise to start this column off by stating that it comes with a bias. I love the Atlantic Ocean and I would not move away from it in a million years. My bias comes from the first 22 years of my life living on the beaches of Santa Barbara over on the west coast.

Not what you expected to hear I bet! Most people that grow up in California either stay there, right on the coast, or at least stay on the western side of the states where they can at least enjoy the mountains. I however have quite a different take, not an unpopular one either, especially after you are able to hear and to think about what you are able to hear and think about what you are about to read and ponder in the following paragraphs about the wonders of the Atlantic Ocean.

Growing up on the west coast was great dont get me wrong but there were certainly things that tainted the beautiful serenity of the Pacific ocean for me that are not associated with the Atlantic ocean in my mind.

Number one thing would be the drugs. Basically in California if you werent a weirdo you were high on some chemical that made you forget about the high cost of living that you had to deal with and the constant threat of earthquakes ever lurking on the horizon of my anxiety. The mixture of these more than average stressors drove me to cocaine and heroin, which was everywhere you turned in sunny California and especially on the beaches. Im sickened to think about the dragnet that this was for me and a lot of other folks who wasted their chance at a productive start on the shores of an ocean that was not the Atlantic Ocean.

The other main thing I love about the Atlantic Ocean is the relative lack of surfing, a sport I once loved but now detest. I lost my love to the jaws of a viscous Pacific Ocean shark as she was paddling out on a large wave day you see, and have renounced the sport that took so much from me. Its not that the east coast waters dont have sharks its just that they are colder and less enjoyable to surf in (less waves.)

So overall it isnt a love of the Atlantic Ocean for me so much as it is a hatred for the Pacific Ocean that haunts me with all of the deepest recesses of my life that I want to recover from and forget about. Maybe this way I will be able to fall asleep at night without valium.

Midi Sequencer – Music Revolution

February 22, 2012 at 9:34 pm • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

Discovering the music revolution and why midi’s part in it has become mainstream for the industry and essential for many composers and musicians.

Midi Sequencer

The first thing to understand about midi sequencers is that they make no sound of their own. True, some later hardware units come with onboard sounds that the sequencer will use, but when midi sequencers originally came to market they were a stand alone application (both hardware and software units) and it was necessary to plug the midi output of the unit into the midi in of the desired sound module (there were dozens of them; DX7 (keyboard), TX7 (module) various Roland units (Sound Canvas, MT 32), Korg, and many others.

The sequencer’s role is to capture, accurately, the digital midi events produced by a midi keyboard or other type of midi controller such as a guitar to midi converter or Yamaha’s EWI – a midi wind instrument. The instrument sends out data in 7 bit packets (7 bits allows counting to 128) and tells the receiving unit what type of data is coming, note on, the note number to play, the midi channel it’s on, the velocity of the note and, note off.

Over the past years its become more common for designers to use note duration (instead of using key on/key off protocol) as this helps prevent “stuck notes”, an unfortunate experience, especially in a live environment, where the sound module hasn’t received the “note off” and continues to play one or more sounds.

———————–

There are many midi sequencers available from low cost to expensive. I began with Steinberg’s Pro24 many years ago using Atari computers and continued throughout Cubase’s era until Cubase SX2. I had no end of problems with Cubase when I moved to the PC platform and so began a search for something that would work for me. In the end I came across SAWStudio and the Midi Workshop and, after testing these for a few months, discovered that this combination was rock solid as far as locking audio to midi and vice versa.

I ended up going with SAWStudio + MWS combo and continue to be impressed by how well this setup works – also at this point I must make mention of SAWStudio’s excellent sound quality, something missing from my previous experiences. With an install size of just 1.4 meg – a full working environment can be put onto a USB memory stick. SAWStudio’s use of computer resources is so low that I have successfully used a Celeron 400 equipped desktop computer to run a full-on theatre restaurant show with music and sound effects, plus running the light show with 3 light controllers chasing midi commands from the Midi WorkShop.

That was fun stuff :)

———————–

So – back to the story of the midi-music revolution. First we’ll take the example of a 4 piece band. If the musicians are hot players and work well together, it’s best to record them direct to tape or disk. What if they’re not so great live but have many excellent ideas? Should they sink back into the darkness just because they, so far, haven’t developed their playing skills to a high degree? I don’t think so – and if it were the case, there would be a hell of a lot of music that would never have come to our attention.

Let’s say the 4 piece band play well, but the drummer’s kit sounds like a collection of rubbish tins. We could have the band play live and “replace” the drum sounds later (probably keeping the cymbals), or we could program a drum track with some great sounds and have the band follow the track.

Maybe we find we need to add some brass later. No problem – play it live to disk or tape; or add another midi track and play the notes into the track.
Playing the notes into a midi track allows for much flexibility later at the mixing stage as notes can easily be shifted anywhere you desire, and sounds can be altered, to suit blending into the mix, or to be wildly different.

Looking at another area – scoring music for film or TV – we see midi has all but replaced traditional orchestral recording.
Certainly nothing compares with a well recorded live orchestra but, as costs skyrocket, only big budget movies are able to afford such productions leaving most of the production work these days to composers utilizing very large midi systems.
These composers will have thousands of top quality samples to draw from and may even augment their midi composition with live strings or various other live instruments – but the basis of their composition will be midi instruments.

Another area is the lone musician. This scenario is where one person is composing and producing songs whereby he/she might compose the whole backing using midi instruments and then, perhaps, record themselves singing and/or playing guitar along with the backing.

The Ins And Outs Of Briana Banks’ Relationships

Loyalty, fidelity, and security are very important to Briana Banks in love relationships. She is cautious about giving her heart away but true to the one who does win her love. Her tastes are simple, even austere, and she does not appreciate frivolity. Banks is interested in a person’s character and inner qualities far more than their appearance. Casual or superficial relationships do not interest Briana Banks at all, for love seems to get deeper and richer and more satisfying for her with time.

Making Smart Decisions Can Help Quit Smoking by Nguang Nguek Fluek!

February 22, 2012 at 5:32 pm • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

There are several ways to help quit smoking, but the first step to take is to make the decision to achieve the goal. Some people use medications such as nicotine patches while others use therapy or hypnosis to help quit smoking. It is generally a matter of what works for the individual, but I will provide a brief outline of some of the common practices employed today as an overview.

Group and Moral Support

For some attempting to quit smoking, a group of people is all they need to help. Having the support and confidence of family and friends is often enough to drive a person to stop smoking, and there are several groups outside of the family that offer this type of moral support. People can join support groups either online or in their communities and accomplish goals together using the resources and techniques shared within the group.

Many people report great results when they attempt to accomplish a goal with friends. This is why several support groups and stop-smoking aids appeal to the connection between human beings to advertise their product or their terms of advice. Moral support and peer opinion is a common motivator in human behavior trends.

Drugs and Other Medical Assistants

Many people turn to medication in order to stop the craving for a cigarette. There are several modes to employ such drugs including the aforementioned nicotine patches and also nicotine gum that replaces the bodys desire for nicotine with an alternative source that does not do harm to the lungs and other organs.

The Federal Drug Administration has also approved several nicotine-free drugs that have recently hit the market that replace the bodys desire for one drug (in this case the nicotine) with a desire for another less powerful drug which lessens over time, thus breaking the cycle of addiction.

There are also anti-smoking vaccines that are on the market. These recently tested and FDA-approved vaccines and drugs are part of a reasonable therapy for those smokers that cannot find another way to help quit smoking. Essentially, the vaccine sends a virus through the body of the smoker which overtakes the desire for nicotine and gradually phases it out.

There are, of course, several reasons to find ways to help quit smoking. Some reasons are personal, but most hold health as a high priority to overcome this addiction. There are many ways to achieve this goal on the market today.

Tension Type Headaches

February 22, 2012 at 4:56 pm • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

Copyright 2006 TriggerOptics.com

Nothing can put you down as fast as a headache of any type – but tension type headaches, which are also called stress headaches often keep us from accomplishing things that we have set out to do. Tension headaches commonly come on in the middle of the day – when we need to be at our best – making it difficult to get our work done or live our lives normally in many cases.

Most sufferers of tension headaches report a constant dull ache on both sides of their heads. These headaches come on slowly, and gradually increase in intensity. A tight feeling in the head and neck may also be experienced. Sometimes the pain is only mild, and sometimes they are severe. Some people report that their tension headaches are worse than a migraine headache. As with most headaches, sensitivity to light is often reported as well.

Tests are not usually required to diagnose a tension headache. Most doctors recognize the problem when the symptoms are reported. However, if you experience tension headaches on a regular basis, especially when there is nothing going on that might cause regular tension headaches, your doctor may order x-rays, a CT scan, an MRI, or blood tests just to rule out other, more serious, possibilities.

How tension headaches are treated is usually determined by the frequency of the headaches. For occasional tension headaches, over the counter pain relievers are often used. You should always read the labels of any type of headache pain relief medication you choose, and do not take it for an extended period of time. If the headaches are not occasional, see your doctor.

For frequent tension headaches, over the counter pain reliever may not work, or may eventually stop working as your body becomes accustomed to the medication. Stronger pain relief medication will most likely be prescribed. You may also need to take anti-anxiety medications as well. Again, this will be determined by your doctor based on the severity and frequency of the headaches.

Because light tends to make tension headaches worse, you should wear a pair of sunglasses to reduce light rays. Sunglasses can often even prevent the headaches. There are companies that offer sunglasses designed specifically for headache sufferers. These sunglasses not only help prevent headaches, they also prevent headache pain from becoming worse.

It is important to know that as headache pain increases it becomes harder to treat the pain. Tension headaches should be treated at the first sign, not when the pain becomes worse. You can treat the headache, from the onset, by putting on sunglasses to reduce the light, taking pain reliever – even though the pain isnt very bad, and by getting away from a stressful situation that may have caused the headache.

You dont have to completely forget about the stressful situation, but you can get away from it for just a little while and relax a bit. In more serious cases, a vacation may even be required. Sometimes, stress can become overwhelming it does more than cause a headache. It can make us very sick, and cause high blood pressure as well! This, in turn, can lead to even more serious health problems.

Other treatments include taking a hot bath or shower and/or using heat or ice on your neck or head. Tension headaches can be prevented, again, by wearing sunglasses in bright light, and also by making sure that you get plenty of sleep at night. Regular exercise will also reduce tension headaches. Avoiding stressful situations also helps.

Again, if you have tension headaches on a regular basis, you should really seek the advice of your health care provider. Over the counter medication wont always help in these situations, and it may even signal a more serious problem.

How to Choose a Resume Writing Service

February 22, 2012 at 4:28 pm • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

Having an attention-grabbing resume is one of the most important parts of the job.search. Your resume and cover letter are your introduction to a potential employer; and without a strong introduction, you may never get another chance to make a good impression. As a result, the success of your job hunt can hang on how well your resume is written.

Maybe you are entering the work force after graduating from college. Or maybe you just need to find a new job. Regardless of why you are looking for work, a skilled resume writer has the power to help you get your foot in the door.

Why Should I Use a Resume Writer?

Resume writing services are more than just a word processing or proofreading service. A resume writer takes your work experience, education, your strengths and weakness, and ties it all up into one little package. Although people usually think of their resume as a simplistic listing of their education and experience, it is actually more like a sales document. In order for your resume to effectively sell you, it not only has to be well written and visually appealing, but also has to present the goods – you – in the best possible light.

Sound easy? Of course not. Why is it, then, that so many people attempt to write their resumes on their own? You wouldn’t try to write a legal contract when the outcome could impact the rest of your life – you would hire a lawyer. By the same token, you should entrust your resume to a professional resume writer.

What Does a Resume Writer Do?

A resume writer’s goal is to convince potential employers that you are perfect for the job. In order to sell your strengths, a resume writer will:

  • Discuss your career focus and gear your resume to your unique goals
  • Choose the best format to highlight your strengths
  • Write an attention-getting summary or list of objectives
  • Use convincing language to maximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses
  • Personalize your resume in a way that shows you off to your best advantage
  • Make your resume available in different file formats if needed
  • Make changes as necessary

Of course, a resume doesn’t really stand by itself. Your career decisions, where and how you search for jobs, and the quality of your cover letter all impact how your resume is received. In other words, if you are looking for work in the wrong places, or don’t introduce your resume properly in the cover letter, it won’t matter how dazzling your resume is.

Resume writing services often offer a whole package approach to resume writing. To ensure that you land your dream job, your resume writer may offer additional services, such as:

  • Career consultation
  • Job search consultation
  • Cover letter writing
  • Resume distribution
  • Interview preparation

What Should I Look for in a Resume Writing Service?

A good resume writing service is one that offers you everything necessary to get the attention of potential employers. When shopping for a resume writer, you should look for:

  • Convincing literature on their services - Whether you are browsing a website or looking at an informational pamphlet, pay close attention to how convincing the literature is. If they can’t sell themselves, they likely won’t be able to do a good job of selling you.
  • A good reputation - Don’t forget to Google! If a resume writing service is worth its salt, you should be able to find good reports from happy customers. Even more importantly, if they aren’t any good you are almost certain to find complaints.
  • Experience - Your career is in your resume writer’s hands, so make sure you choose someone with experience. If your career is in a specialized field, you might even want to look for a resume writer who specializes in the field – a writing service that knows the industry will also know what its employers look for in a resume.
  • Education - Submitting a resume with errors is embarrassing enough, but when you’ve paid to have it done right it’s downright tragic. Make sure your resume writer is educated and/or certified, so that you can be sure you’re getting your money’s worth.
  • Personal attention - You don’t want someone who is going to simply plug your information into a resume writing program – you could do that yourself. In order for your resume to stand out, it needs a unique touch that can only be achieved if your resume writer has taken the time to discuss it with you.

Of course, when you are shopping for a resume writing service, don’t forget to listen to your gut. You will have to work closely with the writer during the creation of your resume, so it is important to feel comfortable with him or her.

Putting Your Career First

Hiring a resume writer ensures that your resume looks professional and gets attention. Although the expense may seem unnecessary, consider that you have already invested thousands of dollars into your education so that you could simply get to this point. When your entire career is at stake, don’t throw it away over a typo or a passive verb! A resume writing service can help you make your dream job a reality.

Creating Our Reality

February 22, 2012 at 12:11 pm • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

Imagine that you have just put on a pair of blue-tinted sunglasses. If you were to look around the room and describe what you see, everything would appear blue to you because its being filtered though a blue lens.

But is this reality? No, its your perception of reality. We only see, hear and experience life through the perceptual filters of our senses. This is why life (and reality) is always subjective. Our senses are always at work, filtering out what we believe to be false or what is beyond our ken. I once read a story about how the Indians responded when Cortez landed his ship in the new world. The author claimed that the Indians couldnt see the ships in the harbor because their minds were incapable of conceptualizing such vessels. They had no frame of reference. (This point was recently demonstrated in the movie What the Bleep Do We Know?)

Are you one of those people who is afraid to stretch your perception of reality?

What if you believed that your brain had already, instantly, scanned this page several hundred times and that you already knew everything written here? You are simply reading this page again because youve refused to believe that its possible to recall these words in detail.

Did you know that every human being has a perfect photographic memory? It’s true. Unfortunately, photographic memory lasts for about one-tenth of a second, then almost all of the information is consciously forgotten. Young children have photographic memories that last much longer. However, the ability disappears as children grow older. Why? Is it from lack of use? Do the neurons that generate photographic memory stop firing when the skill no longer serves a purpose? Anthropologists report that in cultures where people do not learn to read or write, photographic memory continues throughout adulthood. If this is true, then is our educational system actually creating limits and barriers to our genius potential? Perhaps our kindergarten curriculum should consist of memory development classes and leave the ABC’s for later when the child can learn them at a glance.

Please don’t think that because you are able to read this page your memory skills have been lost. Remember, everyone has a perfect memory. This is true whether you are one year old or ninety-one. Your mind absorbs everything that happens to you and processes this information, consciously or unconsciously, through the five senses. It is the process of retention and recall that needs improvement, and here again, it is subject to the realm of your belief system. If you truly believe that you have a perfect memory and a faultless recall system, the brain, being a servo-mechanism (goal oriented), will continue to modify your skills until this becomes your truth. This is why using mental imagery and affirmations is so important. They can help your program your brain to accept its truth on the subconscious level. Once that happens, your world is infinitely better because you have created a new paradigm of whats possible for you. You have removed your limitations and accepted a new reality.

So, today, why not change your world from the inside out? Knowing you can is simply a matter of believing you can.

Wakeboarding for Beginners

February 22, 2012 at 9:53 am • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

You might have probably heard of wakeboarding already. And you have the first impression that this is a “no fear” game – for daredevils; that sounds difficult. Perhaps you’re right, but how you approach it is all up to you. Getting started is easy if you follow these simple steps.

Firstly – have the right equipment; the latest pro board is not always the best to learn with. Give yourself a chance and get a board that is forgiving and helps you to progress. Choose a board which is light and easy to manage. A larger board with one or more large rear fins helps to give the board direction, which is important when learning.

Getting closer to the boat is helpful for learning to wakeboard. Thus a shorter rope is highly recommended about 15 meters (50′). Another essential bit of gear is a buoyancy vest. It is not only basic safety equipment but it will also save you a lot of energy as you hit the water regularly. The driver should remember that you need a lot less speed to get going and to stay planeing than water skiing – 3540 kph max. A wakeboard offers more resistance when starting, so start slowly!

If you have all the necessary wakeboarding equipments ready, the next thing to do is to learn the stance – how and where to stand on your board. Your first stage is to determine whether you are a regular lead (left-foot-forward) or goofy lead (right-foot-forward). For those who have skateboarded or snowboarded before, this is easy. If this is your first board sport, don’t panic. Stand up, facing frward, feet together and have someone push you from behind. Whichever foot goes forward first is your lead foot.

Now that you know which foot you’ll place forward, it’s time to set up your bindings. Riders just getting started should try placing the bindings at about shoulder-width apart with the rear foot slightly farther back (closer to the rear fin) to aid with directional stability.

The angle of your bindings is important. Start with the rear foot straight across the board (O degrees) or slightly forward to 9 degrees (one set of holes in the base plate). Your front foot should be at an angle of 9-27 degrees (2-3 sets of holes) to get started. For your safety, before you get started, double-check the security of your fins and bindings. Do this again every time you hit the water. You should even periodically check them during your ride after a fall.

Learn first the Deep Water Start by floating on your back with a buoyancy vest. The board should be perpendicular to the rope with your arms either side of your front knee. Signal the driver to put the boat just in gear. As you are pulled slowly forward, the pressure against the board will allow you to get into the proper starting position with most of the board below the surface of the water. Let the pressure on the board push your knees into your chest, then push your front foot forward toward the boat. Signal the driver to hit it and remain in a crouched position.

As the boat begins to go, keep your arms slightly bent near your lower stomach. Shift your weight toward the front foot while keeping the nose above the water. As the water begins to give you support, slowly rise to the standing position by extending your legs until your knees are slightly bent.

Once you are up, get comfortable on your board with slightly more weight on your rear foot. Let your hips and shoulders turn away from the boat. Riders with a skiing background have a tendency to try to face the boat, this will often lead to a face plant as they catch or drop their front edge. Practice getting comfortable in the sideways position and relax. The key to the deepwater start is letting the boat do the work. Stay down low and stand up slow!

Wake boarding has the inherent dangers of all water sports, plus the dangers of motor powerboats, with screw propellers. So always observe precautionary measures and you will not get into trouble.

Direct Deposit Cash Advances For Recipients Of Private Pensions

February 22, 2012 at 6:42 am • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

A direct deposit cash advance is a quick and easy way for retirees who receive private pensions payments to obtain cash that they may need unexpectedly. Retirees are seldom financially secure since so many rely on a fixed level of income. Even budgets based on a relatively high fixed incomes can be upset by unforeseeable emergency expenditures.

One of the biggest advantages of direct deposit cash advances for retirees is that there are no restrictions on the way the borrowed money may be used. With cash in hand, retirees can use it to help cover the part of medical bills and prescription medications not covered by Medicare. Some may need to apply the funds to home or auto repair.

Another benefit of direct deposit cash advances for retirees is the ease of the online application process. In about 30 minutes, an individual can complete the application process. This consists of providing basic details such as your name, the cash advance amount youre interested in obtaining, and information about your bank account and your private pension. Once the information is verified, approval can be forthcoming.

As the name implies, direct deposit cash advances are deposited directly into your bank account the next business day following loan approval. Since the funds are directly deposited into your designated checking account at your bank, the recipient is not required to devote precious time waiting in line at a bank branch to deposit a check. And because the funds are directly deposited, there is no hold period on the funds as there might be when depositing a check drawn on a different bank than that of the borrower. This means that on the day that your loan is posted to your bank account, the money is yours to spend as you need.

A repayment schedule will be created as part of the application process based on the date that you are scheduled to receive your next recurring pension payment. This is within 30 days of the date of the submission of the loan application. Remember, this is a cash advance meant to be only a short-term loan so money is to be repaid quickly. Repayment is just as easy as the loan initiation process. When your next private pension payment is deposited into your bank account, the amount of cash advanced will be automatically debited from your account to repay the loan. From there, the funds will make their way back into the account of the cash advance company and your repayment obligation will be fulfilled. Loans may usually be extended for no more than two or three pay periods based on state law and the policies of the lender, but, since the fees for such extensions would become substantial, these limits cannot be exceeded by borrowers.

As you can see, direct deposit cash advances for recipients of recurring pension payments are superior to the alternative means of obtaining short-term cash. This is a ready source of funds available in a reliable, secure, and confidential manner from any location with a personal computer that has a connection to the Internet.

Climbing Gear

February 22, 2012 at 3:20 am • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

Climbing is a sport that is adventurous and exciting but also involves a certain level of risk. These risks can be reduced if the right gear is used.

Climbing gear is very unique, right from the kind of shoes and gloves we wear. This equipment makes a lot of difference, and this difference can mean life or death. The level of safety thus depends directly on the equipment we use.

Previously, people just used regular tennis shoes, a normal rope and a regular belt for climbing. But these days, there is fashionable gear that makes climbing not only fun, but also safe. Regular climbing gear includes: shoes/mountaineering boots, gloves, harnesses, ropes, racks, belay devices, locking carabiners, helmets, axes, headlamp, sunglasses, first aid kit, camming devices, sewn runners, climbing belays, climbing harnesses, climbing screws, pulleys, pitons, holds, books/maps, special pants, and even underwear for rough weather. Other personal items may comprise: food and water, sun block, extra clothing, camera, tent, cookware, camp stove, sleeping bag/pad, a knife, approach shoes and a chalk bag.

Climbing gear has to be carefully carried since it has to stay with you until you reach the top. You can clip some of the things to your harness, thus keeping the upper part of the body relatively lightweight. However, you may not be able to carry too many things like this, and there is also the chance of losing some things on the way. Most climbers use special backpacks that are designed to hold most of the essential things.

There are many providers of climbing equipment. Some of the most popular brands are: Black Diamond, Volcom, Nixon, Oakley, Smith, Spy, The North Face, Nikita, Eagle Creek, Dakine, Mountain Hardwear and others. Climbing equipment has to be certified by the International Federation of Mountaineering Associations (UIAA) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Before buying the equipment, test for the right size, as comfort is very important. There are many manufacturers of climbing gear today. Check for their products by testing them. Companies are making very durable, strong, yet lightweight products for climbing.

Win Or Lose Team Sports Teach Boys the Skills They Need to Succeed

February 22, 2012 at 2:21 am • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

Team sports are a rite of passage for school age boys across the country. From football in the fall to baseball in springtime, competitive sports have defined generations of youth. Besides the acquisition of obvious skills in a particular sport, participation nets youths with benefits that go far beyond punting footballs or catching grounders.

Young boys develop physical stamina and health, confidence in their abilities, as well as perseverance. They also learn to understand the value of teamwork and leadership. Young athletes that play sports will be rewarded with a sense of accomplishment as they set goals and to work hard at reaching them.

In a society where obesity has risen to near epidemic levels, boys who participate in competitive sports attain a level of physical conditioning that excels their peers who merely attend public school physical education classes. Physical conditioning sets athletes apart by giving them a solid understanding of fitness, and the discipline necessary to keep their bodies in top form.

A boy in sports learns to persevere. Under the watchful eyes of dedicated coaches, a boy soon learns the value of sticking with the program, even when the going gets tough. Youth athletes become acquainted with their personal limits and, more importantly, how to surpass them. Lessons in perseverance at an early age build confidence and establish patterns of endurance that will serve him well throughout his life.

Early on in sports, young men see the accomplishments of those who have gone before them. With a sports role model, boys will learn to dream big. In achieving their dreams, boys learn additional lessons as well: perseverance, patience, and goal setting. Instead of day dreaming over fantasies, boys learn to systematically attain one level of success at a time. As each goal is met, the thrill of accomplishment will propel them forward to higher standards.

A young man in sports will soon begin to recognize his own talents and abilities, and the important seed of confidence is sown. Even when failure is the lesson of the day, boys can gain important skills. Losing can develop sportsmanship and in encourage boys to try harder, do better and reach the mark. When boys face tough opponents they gain confidence. Sports are a personal test a that help a boy grow into a man.

Inherent in competitive sports is the value of teamwork. As a competitor, youth discover how to work with their teammates. Learning to be a contributing member of a team is a valuable skill that will help boys throughout their life. When playing on a team, athletes gain a perspective of the bigger picture and learn to set aside petty differences for the good of everyone. Sportsmanship develops when boys shares in the glory of winning, and the disappointment of defeat.

It is difficult to measure the potential benefits for a young man who participates in a youth sports program. The lessons learned have an effect that extend far beyond childhood. Sports build positive character traits such as perseverance, confidence and goal setting abilities. These less tangible rewards grow alongside the physical benefits of health and fitness creating well-rounded young men with the skills and integrity to succeed.

The Corporate Blogging Alphabet

February 21, 2012 at 10:29 pm • Posted in UncategorizedComments Off

Corporate Blogging Alphabet – What Is It?

I built this alphabet to showcase what I think are the benefits and best practices of corporate blogging. Not all of these entries will apply to every individual blogging scenario, but they all apply to corporate blogging in general. So here you have them, corporate blogging benefits and best practices … from A to Z.

Accountable

Accountability applies to corporate blogging in two primary ways. With single-author blogs (such as CEO blogs), the author can inspire trust among readers by “owning” his or her commentary. But companies also assume a certain level of accountability for all blogs under their umbrella, regardless of disclosures to to the contrary. So blogging accountability must be carefully considered at both the individual and corporate level.

Believable

Used properly, a corporate blog or CEO blog can make a company more believable. And in the low-trust, post-Enron world of corporate skepticism, a little believability goes a long way. Use your blog to tell an honest story in a passionate way.

Candid

A common mistake in corporate blogging is when organizations use the blog as “website, part two,” shoveling press releases and other corporate literature onto the blog. To achieve the believability mentioned above, a corporate blog must take on the candid, heartfelt voice of the author. Sure, it takes courage to do this (and probably a set of corporate blogging guidelines), but your readers will reward you by becoming advocates.

Direct

Corporate blogs are direct. You write your message, click the “Publish” button, and your words are directly viewable across the Internet. This removes intermediaries from the corporate communication chain. There are no journalists or editors to put their own spin on things. The message goes from the author directly to the audience. Never again will your message be diluted or mis-aligned (unless you do that yourself).

Enthusiastic

In my opinion, only enthusiastic bloggers should be allowed to represent the company. Half-hearted commentary stands out like a purple elephant in the corporate blogosphere. This kind of commentary does more harm than good, whether it comes from the CEO, the communications chief, or Joe Employee. Enthusiasm comes across in blog posts — and it’s contagious.

Flexible

One of the great things about blogs is the versatility with which they can be used. A corporate blog, for example, can be used internally or externally. It can be a news channel, a customer-feedback forum, an educational tool, or a combination of these things.

Google-friendly

And Yahoo-friendly, and MSN-friendly, etc. A corporate blog can help you increase your search engine visibility in a number of ways. For one thing, a blog gives you an easy way to expand your website with new content. If you blog daily for a year, you’ve got 365 new pages of topical content (and 365 new items for people to find through search engines). Blogs are also more “social” than websites, so in time a well-written blog will acquire links from other blogs. This kind of link popularity does wonders for your search engine ranking.

Happening

Nine times out of ten, a corporate blog is more “happening” than its website counterpart. Blogs are easier to update than a regular website. And when you update a blog often with quality content, it becomes an active resource that people are more inclined to revisit.

Informative

When you keep your customers well informed on new products, services or “behind the scenes” company happenings, you increase the likelihood of future business from those customers. Corporate blogging is a simple but effective way to keep people informed.

Jargon-free

Generally, corporate blogs are not the place for corporate speak. At least, not a customer-facing corporate blog. Save that language for your annual report. Business blogs evolved from online diaries, single-author sources of information and insight. Much of this plain-speak expectation carries over to corporate blogs, so the potential power of blogging for business purposes lies within the blog’s frankness, not its jargon.

Knowledgeable

Use your corporate blog to show readers how knowledgeable you are on your subject. When your readers see how much information you have to share on a subject, they’ll recommend your blog to others who are interested in the subject. These are the kinds of readers you want. Just remember, some of your readers will know as much about the subject as you do. So check your facts before posting.

Limitless

Corporate blogs can be configured in endless ways to serve endless roles. They can stand alone, be part of a website, or be part of a larger network of blogs. Because the technical aspects of a corporate blog are limitless, so too are the uses for the blog.

Manageable

Blogs reduce the technical side of web publishing to such a degree that anyone can blog, regardless of their web experience. Blogs are so manageable, in fact, that even a large web presence built on blogging technology can be managed by a single individual. In this way, blogs are only an initial burden on the IT department. Once a blog is setup, it can be managed by the author alone.

Non-invasive

Corporate blogs “pull” readers to the message, rather than “push” the message to the reader. People can sign up for a blog in total privacy, simply by pulling the blog’s RSS feed into their feed reader. In this way, corporate blogs are non-invasive for readers. The readers come to the blog — the blog is not thrust upon them, like other forms of corporate communication. As long as blogs adhere to this non-invasive, respectful approach, they will be held in higher esteem than other communication channels like email.

Operational

Corporate blogs are more than simple communications tools. With their versatility and ease of use, a corporate blog can server operational roles. This might include internal collaboration (like an intranet) or outward instruction (like an interactive Q&A forum). Blogs can be an active part of your organization’s daily operations.

Purposeful

The key to a good blogging experience is to have a purpose. Sure, you can plunge right into corporate blogging and figure out your purpose as you go. That’s part of the appeal. But your blog will be more effective (and easier to produce) if you have a blogging plan and purpose. Maybe your blogging purpose is to educate readers on what goes on behind the scenes at your company. Maybe you want to increase your visibility on the Web. Or maybe the CEO wants to share his ideas on the business to foster interaction. Fill in the blanks as needed, just be sure you have a purpose behind your blogging efforts.

Qualitative and Quantitative

When corporate blogging is done well, it has both a quantitative and qualitative affect. Because blogs are easy to publish, they help you increase the quantity of content on your website. This increases your blog’s value to readers, as well as its visibility to search engines. If the content is also useful and informative to your key audience, the blog adds quality. A well-managed corporate blog can enhance your web presence by adding both quantity and quality.

Reusable

Blog content can be reused for a variety of purposes. For example, if you expand on a blog post (or compile several blog posts), you can create articles that you can syndicate online. This will help you grow your web presence and even more. This is one of the strategies I teach through my blogging guide mentioned at the end of this article. Another example of reusing blog content — Seth Godin’s book Small Is the New Big is simply a compilation of his blog posts over the last few years.

Straightforward

Okay, so this is somewhat repetitive of ‘C’ for candid. But it’s worth repeating. The most popular of the corporate and CEO blogs reached their level of popularity by being straightforward. And here, I’m referring to both the design and the content of the corporate blog. Blogs that are “overly designed” don’t really look like blogs at all. They look like corporate websites, which (I believe) takes away some of their candidness and authenticity. The same is true of blog content. Blog postings that are straightforward and candid will generate more trust, interaction and “buzz” among the blog’s readers than thinly-veiled corporate speak.

Thoughtful

The best corporate blogs are thoughtful. I don’t mean thoughtful in the sense of “kind,” although kindness goes a long way on the Web. I mean thoughtful as in “full of thought.” Blogs with a lot of “fluff” don’t fare well in the corporate blogosphere. So be sure you put some thought into your blog’s content.

Usable

Your corporate blog should be easy to navigate and read. In fact, any blog should be easy to use, or any website for that matter. Web readers and researches are skilled at hopping from site to site. They don’t need much of a reason to bail out on you, and they’ll do just that if your blog is hard to navigate. Review a list of the most widely read blogs on the Internet, and you’ll find they have something in common — they all have simple designs with high levels of usability.

Voluntary

You should blog because you want to, not because you think you have to. If you start a corporate blog just because people say you should, it will lack the heartfelt enthusiasm that’s a hallmark of great blogs. (See ‘E’ for enthusiasm above.)

Wise

Your corporate blog is the ideal place to share your wisdom about your industry. This will help you position yourself as an authority in your field, and will also help foster the trust that’s mentioned under the letter ‘T’ above. Show people what you know about your industry, but do it in a conversational way. A “tip of the day” series is a prime example of this. It’s a great way to share your wisdom, and it’s the kind of thing others will link to if it’s full of useful content or advice.

Xstensible

Okay, so I cheated with this letter. But blogs are certainly extensible (and you try to come up with a good adjective starting with ‘X’). Corporate blogs, business blogs, CEO blogs — any blog — can grow as the company grows. You can add additional authors, additional sections, whatever you need. And it doesn’t require and act of the I.T. gods to get it done. By design, blogging programs are meant to be extensible.

Yours

If you ask me, anonymous blogs are not blogs at all … just plain old websites. A corporate blog can have one author or several authors, but it should be somebody’s blog. It should be yours, or his and hers, or all of yours. Somebody needs to own it. Otherwise, nobody will trust what it has to say.

Zippy

The definition of zippy is “lively and full of energy.” These are great traits for a corporate blogs. Some people equate the word “corporate” with “dull.” Show them otherwise. Inject your personality. Show them the passion you have for your industry. That’s the only thing that will keep them coming back.

A lot of women are embarrassed because they have small breasts, and often they feel nervously ashamed when it’s time to wear a bathing suit, or conscious when they see the plunging necklines on other women’s evening dresses. Other women who used to have large, full breasts may be dismayed to find them sagging after giving birth. Breast enhancement is one of the most-discussed topics today among women, and include the highly publicized controversy over breast implants. With the health risks and dangerous side effects of implants, not to mention the costs, women have long searched for safe and proven alternatives.
